Welcome To The Jungle: A Field Guide To Enterprise Computing
The young nerd, pure of heart and deed, fond of clean design and visible source, finds themselves suddenly employed in an enterprise environment, where all is not what it seems, or how it should be. Mixed environments, legacy software, ancient hacks and sociopolitical pitfalls lurk around every corner, seeking to snare and bedevil our hero. How is our young nerd going to survive the corporate machine, much less prosper? Mike Hoye, sysadmin for TFO, talks about the open-source tools they're deploying in their environment, earning the support of management, and how to carry the torch and carry yourself in the enterprise space.
Mike Hoye, Systems Administrator, TFO Mike Hoye is a systems administrator for TFO, the newly-independent Franco-Ontarian TV station, where he's using free software tools to support and smooth the organization's migration to a new infrastructure for hi-def TV production. A veteran Linux user and tech-support monkey, Mike draws on over a decade of cross-platform user support experience to fool people into thinking that he knows what he's talking about. He lives in Toronto with a brilliant wife, a small house, strong feelings about software and powerful metaphor at his disposal. |
