Open source music formats facilitated a global community of musicians and fans who could freely explore the compositions in their native software.
Presentation Description:
Module (MOD) music was the soundtrack of 1990s dial-up BBSes worldwide. One of the first examples of digital mashup culture, free open source formats empowered fans to enjoy and examine songs made by their peers and borrow their samples and melodies to become musicians themselves. This lecture will discuss the impact of the open source philosophy on culture by examining the history, technology, community, and legality of this free music movement. We'll also write a quick song together.
